The sweets comports wide shallow dish stands on a large elevated cone that gracefully flares out and ends in a band of hand applied concentric rings. The bowl and the stand were cast separately slip cast and then joined together by hand (usually they are found relatively straight but the hand joining can cause some to be slightly tipped). Increasingly hard to find these days, the popularity of this charming shape is on an upswing. Measuring 3 1/2" tall by 5" wide and made from 1936-1946, they will be found in the first six original colors only.

Made only in the first six fiestaware colors, the large footed compote bowl, showcases the ambition of pottery makers at Homer Laughlin. The bowls were cast in two separate pieces and the foot would have been attatched to the bowl by hand. Then the foot would be flared out even more by a shaping tool and then the rings would have been etched into both the foot and the underside of the bowl by hand on a jiggering machine by a metal blade as the pieces were spun around one by one, a fascinating and time consuming manufacturing process. The final result was a spectacular shape, measuring 12 1/2" wide x 3 1/2" tall.
Circa 1936-1942: Made for just over six years before the red colored glaze was discontinued, it's a delight to find the large fiestaware footed compote in excellent condition such as this nicely marked example.
