Made only in the first six fiestaware colors, the large footed compote bowl, showcases the ambition of pottery makers at Homer Laughlin. The bowls were cast in two seperate pieces and the foot would have been attatched to the bowl by hand. Then the foot would be flared out even more by a shaping tool and then the rings would have been etched into both the foot and the underside of the bowl by hand on a jiggering machine by a metal blade as the pieces were spun around one by one, a fascinating and time consuming manufacturing process. The final result was a spectacular shape, measuring 12 1/2" wide x 3 1/2" tall.
Circa 1937-1946: The wonderfully large bowl with rings inside and out, top to bottom, was hand joined to the flared out pedastle base which was also decorated with an abundance of rings. This example in yellow is nicely marked on the bottom under the glaze "GENUINE fiesta HLCo USA".

The sweets compote stands in great contrast to the large 12" footed compote. Both are examples of footed compote bowls, but the sweets comport stands only 3 1/2" tall by 5" wide, coming in at a fraction of the size of the larger version. The sweets comports wide shallow dish stands on a large elevated cone that gracefully flares out and ends in a band of hand applied concentric rings. Increasingly hard to find these days, the popularity of this charming shape is on an upswing. Made from 1936-1946 and found in the first six original colors only.
