Vintage Fiesta plates were made upside down. The face of the plates, with its band of graduated concentric rings was formed in a plaster mold. Clay was pressed into the mold which was then rotated while a tool shaped the bands of rings on the back side. The jigger tool would be manually lowered to carve into the clay, much like a woodworker on his lathe. This work was hand done at Homer Laughlin until the '40s when automatic jiggers were installed. Not all items switched to the automatic machines and there is a period of transition from the '40s into the '50s where hand jiggering is still seen causing an abundance of variation in the number of rings, their depth and precision. Much of the attraction found in Vintage Fiesta pottery comes not just from the shapes, but from the colors, and it is here, on the humble Vintage Fiesta plates where color gets to showcase itself. All plates were bisque fired (perhaps stamped), cooled for days or even weeks, then fully glazed and fired again in the glost kiln. Vintage Fiesta plates were manufactured in four sizes: 6" Bread and Butter, 7" Salad Plate, 9" Luncheon Plate and 10" Dinner Plate. Flatware also included 10" and 12" divided plates, 13" and 15" chop plates, and an oval platter.
