Circa 1939: The American Potter Exhibit— The highly detailed, embossed potters plaques that Bill Barrisford and Garvin Miller created for Homer Laughlin's participation in the Joint Exhibit of Capital and Labor for the New York 1939 Worlds Fair are a joyous celebration of talent, technique and artistry. The embossed plaques came in two scenes, "Thrower at the Wheel"and "Artist at the Wheel". Both scenes were most commonly produced in the original Vintage Fiesta turquoise glaze, a brown glaze, and what Homer Laughlin noted as "Rutil", which has become known as beige. (Buff Rutil Titanium Dioxide is still used today to lend opacity to white and bring down the brightness of a pure white— resulting in a beige colored glaze). This example of the "Thrower at the Wheel" Embossed plaque, in the original Vintage Fiesta turquoise glaze, is nicely marked on the back "The American Potter, New York Worlds Fair, 1939, Joint Exhibit of Capital and Labor". Measures 7 3/16" across.
