Circa 1951-1959: Homer Laughlin began producing Harlequin in the late 1930s for the Woolworth five and dime stores. The sauce (or gravy) boat was added to the line shortly after its succesful release. A popular piece that ran for the rest of the length of production, dipped in all twelve glazes, the Harlequin sauce boat commands much more presence than one might think. The long, angular handle brings the total length of the piece to 8 1/2". By the 1950s a different mid-century color selection was in use at Homer Laughlin and the brighter more primary colors from before had been replaced by a cool gray, dark green, dusty rose and a chartreuse green. The '50s colors will prove to be hard to find as production tempered. This example in chartreuse is in excellent condition, without damage or signs of use and a nice white dry foot and rich glaze color.
