The abundance of variation in the casseroles designed by Frederick Rhead at Homer Laughlin during the 30s for their various pottery lines is astounding. His original vision for the Fiesta
casserole was more like the Fiesta
French Stick Handled Casserole, which although not produced originally we are lucky to know through the promotional items released in the 40s. The Fiesta
casserole was one of the largest pieces made for the entire time the vintage line was in production. The scroll handles and finial top remind us of the covered onion soup bowl and the sugar bowl. The casserole would require quite a bit of hand work, outside rims were formed on a jiggering machine, handles and knobs joined by hand, even the underside of the lid is adorned with hand jiggered concentric rings. The Harlequin
, Riviera, and Fiesta
Kitchen Kraft lidded casseroles also underwent much of the same attention to detail and hand craftsmanship.

Circa 1951-1959: It is a treat to find the rarer 50s colors, and especially the most desirable of them, the Chartreuse Green glaze, on the classic Fiesta shapes that were in production since the lines release in the mid 30s. Hand applied finial and jiggered concentric rings along with perfect scroll handles makes the Fiesta casserole a classicly designed piece of American dinnerware that harkens back to earlier days. This example is wonderful and perfect.

Circa 1940-1943: Perhaps one of the boldest designs in the entire line, originally designed in the spring of 1935, it wasn't until a few extra pieces were added for the promotional campaign in the early 40s that the shape was produced.

Circa 1959-1969: Fiesta pottery had been on the market for nearly 25 years before the introduction of the Medium Green glaze. Sales were already slowing and many pieces had been discontinued from the original line. The covered casserole was one of the last remaining giants of the original Fiesta selection. A fantastic piece of holloware that included great details like separately cast handles and knobs that would have to be hand applied, along with an abundance of concentric rings and a gently flaring foot. Advanced collectors will enjoy the ability to add such a large piece of Medium Green holloware to their collection. It is an iconic piece that marks the end of an era.

Circa 1936-1940: Maroon was one of the original four colored glazes in the Harlequin pottery line. Although 12 colors would be dipped on the Harlequin shape over its near 30 year run, the original four colors hold a special place in the collectors heart, with spruce and maroon being in high demand as they were discontinued first and were the lines shortest running glazes. The covered casserole shape is one of the showcases of the line and is a treat to find dipped in the early, original color of maroon.
